Nishesh Basavareddy is set to lock horns with Justin Engel in his last group-stage match of the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025 on Friday, December 19.

The American youngster suffered a heartbreaking 4-3(2), 4-3(8), 4-1 defeat against the second-seeded Alexander Blockx in his second match. After an impressive win against Dino Prizmic in his first match, the 20-year-old struggled against the title-favorite Belgian, and now needs a win in his last group-stage match to secure a semifinals berth.

Justin Engel, on the other hand, suffered back-to-back defeats in his first two group stage matches. After losing to Alexander Blockx in the first match, the German's bid for the semifinal took a hit with a 4-1, 2-4, 4-3(3), 4-1 defeat against Dino Prizmic on Thursday. Engel can still make it to the semifinals if he beats Basavareddy and finds a favorable result in Prizmic's last match against Blockx on Friday.

The German is the youngest participant in the 2025 Next Gen ATP Finals and is eighth-seeded in Jeddah.

He failed to reach the semifinals of any event this year, but has done well in the season-ending event so far. The American put up a fight against Blockx, taking the first two sets to tiebreaks, and will look to overcome the defeat with an easy win against struggling Engel.

After two defeats in two matches, Justin Engel will look to finish his maiden campaign in Jeddah on a high note. He has shown his potential this season, winning one challenger-level and one ITF title. However, the 18-year-old lacks experience from playing in high-intensity matches, compared to Basavareddy, who has played 20 tour-level matches this season, including three main draw matches at Grand Slam tournaments.
