Nigeria will begin their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign when they square off against Tanzania on Tuesday (December 23rd). The game will be played at Complexe sportif de Fes.

The Super Eagles finalized preparations for the tournament with a 2-1 defeat to Egypt. They went behind to Mahmoud Saber's 28th-minute strike. Nantes centre-back Chidozie Awaziem equalized in first-half injury time. Mostafa Mohamed scored what proved to be the match-winner eight minutes into the second half.

Tanzania, meanwhile, let a two-goal lead slip in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Kuwait. Charles M'Mombwa and Tarryn Allarakhia scored first-half goals to put them 2-0 up at the break.

Mohammed Daham scored a brace to draw the game level eight minutes into the second half. Yousef Nasser and Hasan Al Anezi scored a goal each, while M'Mombwa scored a consolation strike late on.

The Taifa Stars will shift their attention to the AFCON, and have been drawn alongside Nigeria, Tunisia, and Uganda in Group C of the tournament.

Nigeria vs Tanzania Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • Nigeria are unbeaten in nine head-to-head games (six wins).
  • Their last meeting came in September 2016 when Nigeria claimed a 1-0 home win in a 2017 AFCON qualifier.
  • Tanzania are winless in nine prior games at the AFCON (Six losses).
  • Seven of Nigeria's last eight games have been level at halftime.
  • Tanzania have not kept a clean sheet in their last six fixtures.

Nigeria vs Tanzania Prediction

Nigeria topped their AFCON qualification group to get here, but come into the tournament with uncharacteristically low expectations. The Super Eagles had a disappointing World Cup qualification campaign that saw them fail to qualify for a second successive World Cup.

This was scandalous for a team so well-stacked, and manager Eric Chelle's squad for this tournament left a lot of questions back home, with some notable exclusions and questionable inclusions.

Tanzania are competing at the AFCON for the fourth time, having only made their debut in 2019. The East Africans are heavy underdogs in this tournament, but Nigeria's struggles mean they will fancy their chances of springing an upset.

However, Nigeria will be keen to go one further than their runners-up finish at the last AFCON, as well as make up for their disastrous World Cup qualification campaign.

Prediction: Nigeria 2-0 Tanzania
