It's an exciting time to be a UCLA fan, with the Bruins off to a 5-0 start and making noise in the Big Ten.

After beating Oregon in Week 6, UCLA remains unbeaten and came in at No. 12 in the most recent AP Poll with serious momentum toward potential College Football Playoff contention. But on Monday, the Bruins got season-altering news.

Starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who joined the Bruins in 2025 after leading Tennessee to the playoff in 2024, is dealing with a knee injury that will change the dynamic of UCLA's offense.

Here's what's known about Iamaleava's injury.

Nico Iamaleava knee injury update

On Saturday, Iamaleava helped lead UCLA to its 17-15 upset against Oregon to remain undefeated, but after throwing two interceptions, he left the game with a knee injury. Afterward, backup Ty Dieffenbach took over at QB1, completing the win with a touchdown pass.

Now, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported Monday that Iamaleava has a knee injury that is expected to end his 2026 season.

UCLA standout QB Nico Iamaleava is expected to miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury he suffered during the Bruins’ win over Oregon on Saturday, sources tell @CBSSports. An unfortunate development for No. 12 UCLA and for Iamaleava, who had been brought up by multiple NFL front office staffers recently as an ascending top three round draft prospect.

ESPN's Pete Thamel, meanwhile, described Iamaleava's timetable as "out indefinitely" with no official timeline for his return, pending an upcoming medical evaluation.

For UCLA, it's devastating news in an otherwise spectacular season; Iamaleava has totaled 982 passing yards, four touchdown passes, four interceptions and 144 rushing yards so far this season.

“When someone goes down and someone has to step up, I say it every single time… you’re either exposed or you’re revealed,” UCLA head coach Bob Chesney said postgame on Saturday, per On3. “One of the two is going to happen when your number gets called. For Ty to step up in that moment when Nico couldn’t go, he put himself in a spot where he was revealed for knowing the run game and getting us into the touchdown pass.”

Dieffenbach is set to take over UCLA's starting quarterback job moving forward, a huge role for the senior who transferred from Cal Poly this past offseason.

As UCLA prepares for a Week 7 matchup against Wisconsin, it will be with a new quarterback in Chesney's offense.
