The Los Angeles Lakers made two notable roster moves following their 114-110 preseason victory over the Sacramento Kings last Thursday.
The 17-time NBA champions reportedly cut ties with a rookie center and signed a 6-foot-9 forward recently released by the Houston Rockets.
“Lakers sign forward Rafael Castro, waive William Kyle III,” Sports Illustrated Ryan Ward reported last Friday while sharing a screenshot of the franchise’s latest press release.”
Castro, whom the Houston Rockets waived during the first week of October, went undrafted this past June following a standout senior season with George Washington. The do-it-all frontcourt stud averaged 15.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.8 steals per game in 29 contests with the Revolutionaries.
After an uneventful NBA Draft experience in late June, Castro inked a Summer League deal with the Milwaukee Bucks. The Dover, New Jersey native’s play earned him a two-way contract with the Rockets, but the partnership was short-lived.
Fortunately for Castro, he’ll have a chance to latch on with the Lakers during the final stages of training camp. Kyle, meanwhile, averaged a measly 0.6 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.3 blocks with Los Angeles in three preseason games before being sent packing.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out for the two big men moving forward.
