NFL writer links Rams to Kyler Murray if one free agent scenario happens

1 hour ago 2

The Los Angeles Rams are looking to go all-in for the 2026 season now that Matthew Stafford is slated to return to the team following his MVP season.

While the Rams are going all-in, they do need to consider covering all of their bases. To do so, they could bring in a better backup quarterback in case Stafford misses time. And if they do, why not land the top free agent in Kyler Murray?

Kevin Patra of NFL.com outlined the one scenario that could happen, which could have Murray signing with the Rams this offseason. While it's incredibly unlikely, it's an interesting scenario that would be fun for the Rams.

How Rams could sign Kyler Murray in free agency

"If Murray sees no path to a starting gig," Patra writes, "he could do worse than spending a year in the QB rehab facility in L.A."

There is only one extremely unlikely scenario in which Murray could sign with the Rams. If teams across the NFL don't have a landing spot for Murray to give him a starting job, his best landing spot as a backup would be in Los Angeles.

Landing Murray would cost the Rams the veteran minimum, which would be cheaper than most other backup quarterback options they could consider.

Sean McVay and the Rams have been a great landing spot for quarterbacks looking to return to the spotlight. Baker Mayfield turned his career around after a brief stint with the team, and it wouldn't be a surprise if Murray followed suit.

But, of course, the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Atlanta Falcons, among many other teams, would surely consider adding Murray for their starting job in 2026.

However, if Murray doesn't find a suitable landing spot and starting job, or if he wants to learn from McVay and Stafford for a year, then going to the Rams would be his best-case scenario as a backup.

A team like the San Francisco 49ers or Detroit Lions wouldn't be bad either, but the Rams might be the best case scenario for Murray if he isn't a starter.

Patra is linking the Rams to Murray, despite how unlikely a pair it is. It's a fun hypothetical, but it's incredibly unlikely barring a complete surprise this offseason.
