The New York Giants and Washington Commanders played a sloppy game on Sunday resulting in the NFL's first tie of the season.

The Commanders were in control of the game early, as they had a two-score lead for much of the contest, which included being up 27-13 well into the second half. However, the Giants stormed back with 14 unanswered points to force overtime at 27-27.

In overtime, both teams made crucial mistakes on their way to splitting the tie, as both teams leave the game disappointed. Still, New York will probably feel like it got away with one as Washington is the team that committed the fatal error to end the extra time.

Here's a look at how the Giants and Commanders tied on Sunday.

How Giants-Commanders played to a tie

In overtime, both teams get the chance to possess the ball once, but these two teams each got the ball twice. First, the Giants drove down the field  and got into field-goal range, but kicker Dominic Zvada missed the attempt to keep the game all square.

After the Commanders failed to get into scoring position, New York got the ball back needing a field goal to win, and it seemed like they were going to end the game. However, Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball in Washington territory, giving the Commanders life.

With under two minutes left in the game, a solid Commanders drive would ensure a victory. Washington did drive down the field, getting into field goal range, and it appeared that this time the Commanders would win the game.

As time was winding down, though, Jayden Daniels and the Commanders offense let the clock expire as it seemed like they didn't know they had zero timeouts left. Instead of giving kicker Drew Stevens a chance to win the game, Jayden Daniels was unable to stop the clock before time expired.

After two-straight seasons without a tie, there have now been ties in back-to-back seasons. This is also the second time in five seasons that the Giants and Commanders tied, as they also did so late in the 2022 season.

Both the Giants and the Commanders now have four ties in their franchise's history, three to each other and one to another team.
