After the well-documented fall of Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the draft, former NFL players like Warren Moon have been offering advice.
Moon is down at the Kentucky Derby this weekend and touched on the Sanders subject during an interview with Kay Adams. And, Moon had some advice for Sanders: be humble.
"You can't act like a cornerback when you're playing quarterback. Quarterback is a humble position. You've got to be respectful... that's what he has to understand," Moon stated.
There have been rumors floating around that perhaps Sanders was a bit full of himself in pre-draft interviews, which could partly explain why he fell so far. If that's the case, Sanders needs to leave that at the door of the Browns' facility if he wants to earn the respect of his teammates and coaches.
Sanders is facing an uphill climb in his first season, as the Browns have a crowded quarterbacks room with Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. Deshaun Watson remains in the room, also but is not expected to play in 2025 after re-tearing his Achilles.
Fellow former quarterback Cam Newton had similar advice to Moon's.
"Lead with work, not clout," Newton said on his podcast recently. "I think he took on the persona of a DB, not a QB. As a DB, you're able to do certain things. You can speak loud and be rambunctious and have that bravado. But as a quarterback, reminder: you are the CEO of that franchise."
Another possible reason why Sanders fell could have to do with the media circus he'll bring with him. Not all of that is his fault, but teams may have balked at the idea of bringing in a young quarterback who could draw a ton of attention, even over the players who are ahead of him on the depth chart.
That's something Cleveland will no doubt deal with, but it's far more worth it to take that on when Sanders was drafted with a Day 3 pick.
