NFL legend sends honest message to Travis Kelce as retirement decision looms

The NFL Honors were held Thursday night, and with the Super Bowl just days away, the offseason is quickly approaching for all 32 teams. That also means a major decision is looming for Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who is weighing retirement after 13 seasons in the NFL.

All 13 of those seasons have been spent in Kansas City, where Kelce has cemented his place as one of the greatest tight ends in league history. He’s won three Super Bowls and set a slew of receiving records in both the regular season and postseason alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

On Friday, during an appearance on Sports Radio 810 WHB, NFL legend and former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez weighed in, offering an honest perspective on how Kelce should approach the decision.

“I think he’s got another year in him," Gonzalez said. "But my advice to him, whether he was sitting here or right now, is come back because you need to in his situation, not because you want to… there’s a difference. You feel like, ‘I can’t live without this game,’ like mentally I just wouldn’t be OK. I want to be around the guys in the locker room… like I need that… The only reason you come back is because you feel like I need this, but if he does come back, that’s a great addition to that Chiefs locker room.”

This past season, Kelce showed that while his production has dipped in recent years, he’s still one of the more productive tight ends in the league, hauling in 76 receptions for 851 yards and five touchdowns.

If Kelce elects to return to the field, he would need to agree to a new deal with Kansas City, as he’s set to enter unrestricted free agency this offseason.
