The Cleveland Browns quarterback room is on the minds of many college football and NFL fans. With Joe Flacco as the starter, both the backups are drawing a lot of attention.
Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel and Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Sheduer Sanders are vying for the starting job, but after the preseason wrapped up, Gabriel was the primary backup and next in line for a start.
However, his turn in the starting lineup is likely going to have to wait, as a new report from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler on 92.3 The Fan reveals that the Browns aren't planning to act with urgency in making Gabriel the starter.
The Browns won't start Dillon Gabriel just yet
"I don't sense a major urgency to get Gabriel in the game right now as a starter," Fowler said. "It's a fluid situation, like a lot of these are. I don't sense that they're there yet. They feel pretty good overall about where Flacco's at.
Fowler also said that the Browns aren't trying to rush anything, but if Flacco continues to struggle and lose, then the Browns might look to make the switch.
But, for now, there is no indication that the Browns are going to have Gabriel be the starter. They aren't going to rush Gabriel into the starting lineup, even if he's looked good in his limited opportunities.
At the end of the game against the Baltimore Ravens, Gabriel got the chance to lead a drive, albeit in garbage time, and he looked good. Gabriel led a two-minute, 53-second touchdown drive where he went 3/3 for 19 yards and a touchdown.
It wasn't a taxing outing for Gabriel, but it was a good way to get his feet wet in the NFL before making his first NFL start. The Browns face the Green Bay Packers in week three, and then the Detroit Lions in week four.

Neither matchup is appealing for Gabriel's first start, along with the week five matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Week six isn't much easier on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. But after that, the Browns have a good opportunity to start Gabriel.
The Miami Dolphins come to Cleveland in week seven, as the Dolphins are one of the worst defenses in the NFL so far. That could be a good chance to put Gabriel in an easier debut start in the NFL, rather than throw him into the fire against an elite defense.
At some point in 2025, the Browns are going to start the former Oregon quarterback. But, for now, the Browns are keeping the ex-Ducks quarterback on ice as Flacco continues to start games for Cleveland this season.
