NFL history does not bode well for Rams' Super Bowl odds despite superteam

The Los Angeles Rams are one of the best teams in the entire NFL heading into the 2026 season. They were already the top team in the league, and that was before they acquired Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.

It's a superteam for the Rams, and their odds of winning the Super Bowl are higher than any other team in the league. However, that might not necessarily be a good thing.

As ESPN's Bill Barnwell highlighted, history doesn't actually bode well for the Rams and their superteam, as only two of the top 15 teams since 1990 by Super Bowl odds compared to their competition have actually won the Super Bowl.

Rams' superteam might not bode well for Super Bowl odds

Barnwell analyzed the top 15 teams since 1990 that had the highest "gap to the rest of the NFL" in odds to win the Super Bowl. Among those 15 teams, the Rams' odds are as follows: "Implied odds: 12.5%. Gap to the rest of the NFL: 5.1%," Barnwell shared.

There are seven teams with a smaller gap than the Rams have, with the 2001 Rams at 3.6% being the lowest gap in Super Bowl odds featured by Barnwell. But the eight teams with higher projected odds are the real reason for Rams fans to worry.

"Well, if you're a Rams fan, this might be a little worrying," Barnwell writes. "Every single team that was projected to be more dominant versus the rest of the competition failed to win the Super Bowl."

Eight teams since 1990 have had a great gap in Super Bowl odds compared to the next closest team in NFL history.

All eight failed to win the Super Bowl, including the 2007 New England Patriots, 2002 Rams, and 2017 Patriots, who had the highest gap in odds at a whopping 11.5%.

So, these preseason Super Bowl odds aren't exactly a good indicator that the Rams will win it all this upcoming season.

Sure, the Rams might be in a better position than most teams, but looking at the eight teams with a larger gap in Super Bowl odds than their competition, all of those teams didn't win it all.

Only two teams inside this top-15 ranking from Barnwell went on to win the Super Bowl. The 1994 San Francisco 49ers and the 2018 Patriots.

Two "superteams" since 1990 have won the Super Bowl. That's not exactly a good omen for the Rams. It's still a great team, and they should still be the favorite to win it all.

But there is reason for Rams fans to be a little worried, as a lot could go wrong, and history is not on their side when it comes to superteams like theirs.
