Closer Luke Weaver will don the New York jersey once more in 2026, but this time, as a part of the Mets. The 32-year-old has reportedly agreed to a two-year, $22 million deal with the Queens-based organization after spending three season in the Bronx. Just two weeks ago, Weaver's Yankee set-up partner Devin Williams also swapped from the famous navy pinstripes to the orange and blue.

Weaver spent the 2025 season alternating roles with Williams as the Yankees' preferred closers with one doing the set-up job and the other closing games. Given that the two former Yankee pitchers were some of the biggest names that the Mets signed so far this offseason, fans from across the MLB sphere expressed their sentiments that the Mets are acting like a pipeline for former Yankee talent.

They are legitimately never beating the little brother allegations💀

Mets want to be the yanks so bad

Just last season, the Metropolitans lured superstar Juan Soto, Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas fresh off their Yankees stint. In addition, Harrison Bader, Luis Severino, David Robertson, and Adam Ottavino further adds on to the pool of players who once plied their trade in the Bronx before transferring to Queens.

Can they take Aaron Boone?

The peculiar approach of the Steve Cohen-owned team has drawn humorous reactions from fans for directly taking more than a handful of players from the Yankees in hopes of replicating their success and possibly making a postseason run.

Mets sign polarizing reliever Devin Williams

On December 3, the Mets and reliever Devin Williams agreed to a three-year, $51 million deal. Williams played for the team's cross-town rival Yankees in 2025, much to the chagrin of the latter's fans.

Expected to dominate and bring his virtually unhittable pitches that garnered him two National League Reliever of the Year awards, Williams massively struggled in his lone season with the Yankees. He posted a 4.79 ERA with 90 strikeouts and just 18 saves across 67 games. For context, the closer saved 14 games in just 22 appearances for the Brewers in 2024.

Williams' ineffictiveness prompted Yankees skipper Aaron Boone to dislodge him from his closer role and re-deploy Luke Weaver to his old role before the star closer arrived in the Bronx. Although Williams recovered some form as a set-up man, it was a far cry and fell short of the expectations of analysts as he's shown that he can be a lights out reliever.

Now that Williams has arrived in Queens and his former Yankee teammate Luke Weaver was also signed by the squad, it would be interesting to see who will take up the slack that was left by former Mets closer Edwin Diaz who bolted to Los Angeles to join the back-to-back champion Dodgers.
