NCAA penalizes Jim McElwain and three others in Connor Stalions case

The NCAA has officially closed its investigation into former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions’ presence on Central Michigan’s sideline during the 2023 season opener against Michigan State, issuing multi-year penalties for those involved.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions announced Thursday show-cause penalties against four former Central Michigan coaches, including a two-year show-cause for ex-head coach Jim McElwain. The penalties were agreed upon by all parties and also included a four-year show-cause for former quarterbacks coach Jake Kostner, and two-year orders for former recruiting director Mike McGee and equipment coordinator Nate Mason.

According to the NCAA, Kostner coordinated Stalions’ sideline access, requesting Chippewas-issued apparel and an official bench pass from McGee and Mason. Stalions, then a Michigan defensive analyst, used the credentials to assist Central Michigan in deciphering Michigan State’s play signals.

At long last, we have the official NCAA explanation of how Connor Stalions wound up on the CMU sideline in coach's gear.

The NCAA found McElwain responsible under his head coach duties, despite determining he may have been unaware of the plan. His show-cause includes a two-year ban from football duties and suspensions totaling 50% of regular-season games across two years.

McElwain announced his retirement from coaching at four decades in 2024. He's now the special assistant to the athletic director at Central Michigan.

Stalions received an unprecedented eight-year show-cause order, while former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, now with the Los Angeles Chargers, was handed a 10-year show-cause. Ex-Wolverines assistant Denard Robinson and current head coach Sherrone Moore also received penalties.
