The Milwaukee Bucks have dropped the first two games of their first-round series against the Indiana Pacers. Not all hope is lost for them, but it doesn't look good. If the Bucks lose this series, it’ll be the third straight year they have been eliminated in the first round.
That could have huge implications for what happens with Giannis Antetokounmpo. The two-time MVP may have three years left on his contract - the last is a player option - but the early playoff losses may start to mount up. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst revealed that how things shake out could impact Antetokounmpo’s future with the Bucks.
“The elephant in the room in the entire NBA. If the Bucks truly aren’t going to be competitive in the NBA… how is Giannis going to look at this going forward? I don’t have an answer. The league doesn’t have an answer, but that question is very likely going to define most of the NBA offseason,” Windhorst said on “Get Up.”
Windhorst added that Antetokounmpo is still loyal to Milwaukee, but he is not ignorant of the Bucks’ failures over the past few years.
“There’s no indication that he has not done everything but invest in this team, but he can see the landscape like everybody else. How can he believe that this Bucks team can improve going forward, considering how devoid they are of all assets? How he looks at that could very possibly change the face of the NBA over the next six months,” Windhorst said.
Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to a title in 2021, but even before that, the Bucks had won two total playoff series with him, and have won only one since. There’s enough evidence to suggest that Milwaukee’s formulas have, more often than not, not worked. Antetokounmpo must not ignore their playoff failures outside of what went down four years ago.
