Nationals' James Wood trade rumor with Red Sox has to be utter nonsense

There's a rumor circulating that the Boston Red Sox are trying to trade for Washington Nationals slugging outfielder James Wood.

And, well, it makes no sense.

For starters, this is the post that began the rumor mill:

Buenas tardes, mi Gente!
Feliz miércoles!

The reporter there is a pregame Red Sox host for their Spanish-language broadcast team.

The translation essentially says that the price would be high, but that the Red Sox have initiated conversations.

And frankly, there are just so many parts of this that raise questions.

For one, don't the Red Sox have more than enough outfielders? Yes, Wood would be an upgrade, but there are clear needs on the roster that aren't in the outfield.

That's not the biggest point, though.

Why in the world would the Nationals trade Wood?

He's essentially a superstar right now, one of the most imposing hitters in baseball, and part of a team that is clearly on the rise.

A Boston package of something like Jarren Duran and a couple prospects wouldn't possibly be enough for Wood. The Nats would have no reason to make that trade.

If a more prominent reporter comes along with this report, maybe the tune changes. But right now, nothing about this would make sense for the Nationals.

The Red Sox might be calling, but it's doubtful the Nats are picking up.
