Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is set to return to the series in the next season. Johnson will compete against the Cup Series drivers at the inaugural event in San Diego at Naval Base Coronado in the 2026 season.

The governing body announced a points-paying race at the 3.4-mile street circuit at Naval Base Coronado to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy in June 2026. The digital rendering and maps reveal a challenging 16-turn street circuit-style layout.

Following that, Jimmie Johnson announced his return to the series for the race. The former Hendrick Motorsports driver grew up just 20 miles outside the military base in California. The Anduril 250 will mark his first race in Southern California since 2020 at Auto Club Speedway.

Reflecting on the same, the Legacy Motor Club owner expressed his excitement and told NASCAR:

“Growing up just miles from San Diego, I dreamed about racing here in a NASCAR vehicle someday. To come back home, compete in front of my community, the military, my family and friends, and do it with Carvana and Legacy Motor Club — this is one of those full-circle experiences you never forget." "It’s absolutely a bucket-list race for me. When I think about everything this sport has given me and where it all started, being able to race in San Diego feels like coming full circle. It’s going to be special,” he concluded.

All three series will compete at the 3.4-mile street-style track from June 19 to June 21. Amazon Prime will also return as the broadcasting partner in the next season. Prime Video will cover the San Diego event live alongside MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

"I didn't clean Maury out": Jimmie Johnson got candid about holding the majority shares of the Legacy Motor Club

Earlier this year, former NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson sat down with stock car analyst Bob Pockrass for an interview. During the interaction, Johnson dismissed all the claims of becoming the majority stakeholder after clearing out the LMC co-owner, Maury Gallagher.

Johnson was announced as the majority shareholder of Legacy Motor Club after the team partnered with Kinghead Capital Management LLC. Following that, the seven-time Cup Series champion explained his side of the story, denying the claims of pushing his partner Gallagher out of the team.

The former HMS driver Jimmie Johnson claimed that Gallagher was in a different phase of his life and wanted to enjoy his day-to-day life. He further told NASCAR analyst Bob Pockrass:

"That's been tough, and went through a lot of that during the course of the season. I was really surprised when I spoke to Maury towards the end of last year that he was just in a different place in life and didn't want so much the day-to-day and wanted to give me that opportunity. And he just wants to come and eat a hot dog and hang out and have his headphones."

Jimmie Johnson's team, Legacy Motor Club, features Maury Gallagher and Richard Petty as the team's ambassadors. However, Johnson aims to expand his team and add another full-time entry to the Cup Series. Currently, John Hunter Nemechek pilots the #42 Toyota Camry XSE, and his LMC teammate Erik Jones drives the #43 car for the team.
