The bodies of an elderly woman and her son were found buried alive inside their car, just feet from a Rhode Island hospital — and weeks after Winter Storm Fern slammed the state with nearly two feet of snow.

Irina Kozak, 75 and her son, Stanislaw Kozak, 49 were both found dead after authorities discovered their white Kia Sorento, which they had called home for the past year, submerged in the snow on Feb. 11 — with Irina Kozak reportedly lying trapped next to her son’s corpse for more than two weeks before she died, according to The Daily Mail.

The pair parked their car outside Miriam Hospital in Providence to seek shelter days before the massive snowstorm blanketed the region in up to 20 inches of heavy snow late last month.

Irina Kozak had called a friend to warn that she was trapped inside of her car at the hospital on Jan. 28, WPRI reported. The friend dailed 911 and told dispatchers that Kozak said her son had not ‘moved in two days,’ prior to being trapped in the vehicle.

The call log showed 911 dispatchers were told that Kozak was “disabled inside her white Kia Sorento” and “cannot get out” — and that her son had “passed away,” said Providence Police Col. Oscar Perez said, according to WPRI.

But the caller didn’t know the exact location of the car, only that it was “at a park near Miriam,” Perez added.

Local police were dispatched to the hospital and searched the area for an hour, but were unable to locate the vehicle or make contact with Kozak.

Police didn’t receive any more leads in the case until Feb. 11 when the Kia was finally located — in a parking lot next to the hospital.

The deaths were ‘weather-related’ and underlying health conditions may have factored in, authorities said, WPRI reported.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in the region plunged into the single digits on Jan. 28 when the 911 call was made, according to the National Weather Service.

Meanwhile, Perez said the department is “reviewing the response to determine if any improvements can be made moving forward,” according to WPRI.
