Most Super Bowl wins by team: Where Patriots rank in full list of NFL franchises with multiple titles

JUMP TO:

Compared to other top professional sports leagues, there is a good bit of parity across the NFL landscape. It's extremely difficult to build a dynasty in the league — between strict cap rules, injury luck, coaching talent being poached elsewhere and players having small prime windows, most teams do not find sustainable success over 5-to-10 year periods.

However, some NFL franchises have still found much more success than others. There remain some squads who have never won a Super Bowl, while others have brought home plenty of Lombardi Trophies, including some in back-to-back years.

For organizations like the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, championship contention has become a near-expectation.

Here is a breakdown of the teams with the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history.

Which NFL team has won the most Super Bowls?

There is currently a two-way tie for the most Super Bowl titles across NFL history, since the championship format was introduced in 1967. The Patriots and Steelers have both won six Lombardi Trophies.

However, the paths to those Super Bowls were far different; Pittsburgh won four Super Bowl in the 1970s, then two more in the 2010s, while New England won three titles in the 2010s, then three more in the 2020s. Unlike the Steelers' titles, the Patriots' six Super Bowls all came under one head coach and quarterback: Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.

How many Super Bowls have the Patriots won?

  • 6 (Super Bowls 36, 38, 39, 49, 51, 53)

The Patriots have won six Super Bowls in their franchise history, all of which have come after 2000, leaving them tied with the Steelers for the most in NFL history. New England's 11 appearances in the big game are, by far, the most all-time, ahead of eight appearances by Pittsburgh, Denver, Dallas and San Francisco.

New England's first Super Bowl came in the 2001 season, when Tom Brady took over at quarterback for Drew Bledsoe. Immediately, Brady helped lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl 36 victory over the "Greatest Show on Turf" Rams, and Bill Belichick had a strong defense that led to a 20-17 win.

The Brady-Belichick dynasty was on from there. In 2003, the Patriots beat the Carolina Panthers, 32-29, to win a second Super Bowl, then they went back-to-back in 2004 by beating the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-21.

For a moment, the Patriots' success met a halt, as they lost to the New York Giants in both Super Bowl 42 in 2007 and Super Bowl 46 in 2011. But in 2014, New England was back on top, taking down the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 for the fourth ring of the Brady-Belichick era.

In 2016, Brady and the Patriots' came back from a 28-3 deficit against the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl. After losing to the Eagles in Super Bowl 51, New England then won its sixth title in 2018 with a 13-3 Super Bowl 53 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

How many Super Bowls have the Steelers won?

  • 6 (Super Bowls 9, 10, 13, 14, 40, 43)

The Steelers have won six Super Bowls, which is tied with the Patriots for the most in NFL history. Four of those Super Bowl wins came in the 1970s, when the team was on a dynastic run.

With a star quarterback in Terry Bradshaw and the "Steel Curtain" defense, the Steelers were the team to beat in the 1970s, first hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in 1974 when they took down the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 9, 16-6. One year later, Pittsburgh went back-to-back by taking down Dallas, 21-17, in the title matchup.

By 1976, Pittsburgh returned to the pinnacle of the league. Once again, the Steelers beat the Cowboys in 1978, 35-31, to win a third Super Bowl in five years. And again, they went back-to-back, defending their title against the Rams in Super Bowl 14 by winning 31-19.

Pittsburgh had a dry spell of Super Bowl success from there, failing to reach the game again until 1995, when it lost to the Cowboys. It wasn't until 2005 that the Steelers would add another Lombardi Trophy, beating the Seahawks in Super Bowl 40 behind Ben Roethlisberger. A few years later, Pittsburgh added title No. 6 by taking down the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl 43.

How many Super Bowls have the 49ers won?

  • 5 (Super Bowls 16, 19, 23, 24, 29)

Tied for third in NFL history with five Super Bowl titles is the San Francisco 49ers, who were one of the league's most dominant franchises before the turn of the century.

While the Steelers were a 1970s dynasty, the 49ers were a 1980s dynasty. Behind Joe Montana, San Francisco first won the Super Bowl in 1981 by beating the Bengals 26-21 in Super Bowl 16. Three years later, the 49ers beat the Miami Dolphins, 38-16, to win a second title.

Later in the decade, San Francisco went back-to-back. In 1988, the team beat the Bengals in Super Bowl 23, then proceeded to defend that title against the Broncos in Super Bowl 24.

The 49ers' most recent Super Bowl title came with Steve Young at quarterback, after Montana's departure. In 1994, San Francisco took down the Chargers, 49-26, to win Lombardi Trophy No. 5.

Since then, the 49ers have appeared in three Super Bowls (2012, 2019, 2023) but haven't won any of them.

How many Super Bowls have the Cowboys won?

  • 5 (Super Bowls 6, 12, 27, 28, 30)

Famously one of the most successful teams in NFL history, the Cowboys have won five Super Bowls in their history — although they all came before 2000.

The first championship for Dallas was in 1971; Roger Staubach and the Cowboys defeated Miami in Super Bowl 6, with a final score of 24-3. That came after a loss in Super Bowl 5 to the Baltimore Colts.

After losing the Super Bowl in 1975, two years later, the Cowboys were back on top in 1977 by beating the Broncos 27-10 in Super Bowl 12.

Similar to the Steelers of the 1970s and the 49ers of the 1980s, Dallas was on a dynastic run in the 1990s — the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four years behind Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and more. First, in 1992, they beat the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl 27. The following year, in Super Bowl 28, the Cowboys once again defeated the Bills 30-13 for another title.

The last Super Bowl win in Dallas came in 1995, when the Cowboys beat the Steelers 27-17. Since then, the Cowboys haven't even played for a Lombardi Trophy, let alone win one.

How many Super Bowls have the Chiefs won?

  • 4 (Super Bowl 4, 54, 57, 58)

The Chiefs have own four Super Bowl titles, with most of their success coming in the Patrick Mahomes-Andy Reid era.

However, Kansas City was one of the NFL's stronger squads in the early Super Bowl years. In Super Bowl 4, the Chiefs won their first Lombardi Trophy by beating the Vikings, 23-7, to cap the 1969 season. Three years prior, the Chiefs had lost to the Packers in the first-ever Super Bowl.

It wasn't until 2019, when Mahomes, Reid and Travis Kelce were the faces of the franchise, that Kansas City returned to the pinnacle of the NFL, 50 years later. First, the Chiefs took down the 49ers 31-20 in Super Bowl 54 — and after falling to Brady's Buccaneers team in Super Bowl 55, it wasn't too long until they won another.

In the 2022 season's Super Bowl, the Chiefs came out on top by beating the Eagles 38-35. Kansas City proceeded to go back-to-back, beating the 49ers in Super Bowl 58 on a walk-off touchdown for a 25-22 final score.

While the Chiefs had an opportunity to complete the NFL's first three-peat in 2024, they ultimately lost to the Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Which player has won the most Super Bowls?

Tom Brady holds the record for most Super Bowl wins by a player — one of his many all-time NFL records. The longtime star quarterback of the Patriots won six Lombardi Trophies throughout his time in Foxborough, then won another in Tampa Bay for a total of seven. No other player has more than five Super Bowl wins.

It was Brady who led all six of the Patriots' Super Bowl wins, doing so in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2014, 2016 and 2018. He made another three appearances in the big game with New England, losing in 2007, 2011 and 2017.

As he spent the end of his career with the Buccaneers, Brady also led them to a title, winning his seventh ring in the 2020 season to further his all-time lead for Super Bowl wins by a player.

Brady also holds the record for most Super Bowl appearances by a player with 10.

Which NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl?

There remain 12 NFL teams that have never won a Super Bowl, which makes up 37.5% of the league.

Here are those teams and their Super Bowl records:

  • Arizona Cardinals (0-1)
  • Atlanta Falcons (0-2)
  • Buffalo Bills (0-4)
  • Carolina Panthers (0-2)
  • Cincinnati Bengals (0-3)
  • Cleveland Browns (0-0)
  • Detroit Lions (0-0)
  • Houston Texans (0-0)
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (0-0)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (0-1)
  • Minnesota Vikings (0-4)
  • Tennessee Titans (0-1)

Of those teams, the Super Bowl especially hasn't been kind to the Bills or Vikings, both of whom have lost all four of their Super Bowl appearances. For Buffalo, those losses came during a brutal four-year stretch in the 1990s where it lost four-straight title games. For Minnesota, those four losses were sprinkled between 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1976.

The Bengals are the only other team to lose at least three Super Bowls with no victories, making appearances in 1981, 1988 and 2021.

Which NFL teams have never appeared in a Super Bowl?

There are four remaining NFL teams that have not made a Super Bowl appearance:

  • Cleveland Browns
  • Detroit Lions
  • Houston Texans
  • Jacksonville Jaguars

Three of the teams are from the AFC, as the Browns, Texans and Jaguars have yet to reach the big game. It's been especially tough for Cleveland — before the Super Bowl era began in 1967, the Browns were actually one of the most successful franchises in the NFL, winning seven championships in the first 10 years of their existence from 1946-55. Things have changed since the Super Bowl era began, as Cleveland has lost five conference championship games (1968, 1969, 1986, 1987, 1989), failing to reach a Super Bowl despite being one of the most historic teams in the NFL.

The Lions have had a similar kind of pain to the Browns. Before the Super Bowl era, Detroit won four championships as one of the founding pro football teams in the country. But since 1967, not once have the Lions made the Super Bowl. They lost two conference championship games in 1991 and 2023.

Meanwhile, the Texans and Jaguars have shorter franchise histories as NFL expansion teams. Houston joined the league in 2002 as the replacement for the relocated Oilers, and the Texans have yet to reach an AFC Championship Game, let alone a Super Bowl. As for the Jaguars, their first NFL season was in 1995, and they even reached the conference title game by 1996 — but Jacksonville has lost all three of its AFC Championship Games in 1996, 1999 and 2017.
