When the Dallas Mavericks selected Morez Johnson Jr. with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, some analysts questioned whether the team had reached for the athletic big man. Just a few games into NBA Summer League, however, Johnson has already begun changing that narrative.
Although he appeared in only two Summer League contests, Johnson emerged as one of the event’s most impressive rookies. His production on both ends of the floor showcased why Dallas believes he can become a long-term cornerstone in its frontcourt.
Offensively, Johnson displayed efficiency well beyond his years. He converted an outstanding 15 of his 20 two-point attempts, shooting 75% inside the arc. His ability to finish around the basket, combined with his decision-making as a passer, stood out throughout his limited action. Johnson consistently made advanced reads out of the short roll, finding open teammates instead of forcing difficult shots—a skill that often takes young big men years to develop.
His defensive performance may have been even more encouraging.
Johnson totaled six blocked shots and five steals in just two games, constantly disrupting opposing offenses with his length, activity and instincts. Whether protecting the rim or jumping passing lanes, he proved capable of impacting the game in multiple ways.
His aggressiveness occasionally worked against him, however. Johnson picked up six fouls midway through the third quarter of his Summer League debut, illustrating that he’ll need to balance his high-energy style with improved discipline as he adjusts to the NBA game.

The biggest area for improvement remains his perimeter shooting. His three-point attempts frequently missed to the side rather than falling short or long, suggesting his shooting mechanics still need refinement. Developing a consistent outside shot will be critical if Johnson hopes to maximize his offensive ceiling at the next level.
Still, the positives far outweighed the concerns in Las Vegas.
For a player many viewed as a surprising top-10 selection on draft night, Johnson quickly demonstrated that he has the tools to justify the Mavericks’ confidence. His combination of athleticism, defensive versatility, finishing ability and basketball IQ gives Dallas plenty of reasons to be excited about his future.
If his Summer League performance is any indication, Morez Johnson Jr. could end up being one of the biggest steals of the 2026 NBA Draft despite being selected in the lottery.
