India pacer Mohammed Siraj showed his bowling prowess once again as he folded South Africa for 154 on Day 3 of the first Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16. The speedster reduced the off-stump into pieces as he dismissed Simon Harmer for seven in the second innings. He then trapped Keshav Maharaja out lbw for 0 in the same over.

The incident took place in the 54th over of the Proteas’ innings. Siraj bowled an angled in delivery that nipped back after hitting the turf. Harmer, being a tail-ender, failed to read the delivery, offering no shot. The ball crashed into the off-stump, which broke into two pieces, a rare sight in modern-day Test cricket.

Mohammed Siraj continues his dream run in Test cricket; India need 124 runs to win against South Africa on a challenging pitch

Mohammed Siraj continued his exploits with the ball, finishing with four wickets in the first Test against the Proteas. Notably, the Hyderabad-born pacer is having a dream year with the ball, picking up 41 wickets in nine Tests. Earlier this year, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, picking up 23 wickets. He then scalped 10 wickets during the two-match Test series against the West Indies at home last month.

Meanwhile, the Proteas set up a 124-run target for India in the second innings. Skipper Temba Bavuma stood tall with the ball, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 136 deliveries, including four half-centuries. Corbin Bosch also chipped in with 25 off 37 deliveries. Ravindra Jadeja starred with the ball for the hosts, picking up four wickets. Meanwhile, Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav bagged one wicket apiece.

At the time of writing, the Men in Blue were 1-2 after 2.1 overs, with Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar at the crease. Marco Jansen has removed the two openers - KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal - for 1 and 0, respectively. The hosts are without regular skipper Shubman Gill, who is unavailable due to a stiff neck.

The highest successful chase in Tests at Eden Gardens is 120, achieved by India against South Africa in 2004.
