After question marks regarding his fitness, India ace pacer Mohammad Shami has silenced the critics in style with his exploits with the ball in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. The 35-year-old bagged a five-wicket haul as Bengal beat Gujarat by 141 runs in their last game.
Overall, he finished with eight wickets in the first-class game, including figures of 5/38 in Gujarat’s second innings. The speedster was equally impressive in Bengal’s opening game of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, picking up seven wickets against Uttarakhand, including 4/38, helping his team win the game by eight wickets.
Surprisingly, Shami has not played a Test match for the Men in Blue since the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. The UP-born pacer struggled with heel and knee injuries over the last two years. As a result, he missed out on the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
After being omitted from the recently concluded ODI series in Australia, the senior pacer recently claimed that he is fit and available for the 50-over series because he is taking part in the Ranji Trophy.
Amid controversy over Ajit Agarkar and Shami’s remarks, assistant selector RP Singh had a brief chat with the fast bowler at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It remains to be seen whether Shami gets a chance in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa next month.
In this article, we will compare Mohammad Shami’s record with Australian pacer Josh Hazlewood.
