MLB writer floats Dodgers-Pirates trade to bring Paul Skenes to LA in 7-player stunner

The Los Angeles Dodgers have leaned into becoming a superteam. They already had Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, but this offseason they added Blake Snell, Tanner Scott and Rōki Sasaki. With trade rumors surrounding Pittsburgh Pirates' Paul Skenes, the Dodgers have come up as a potential suitor.

Rumors about Skenes being traded started when ESPN's MLB insider Jeff Passan appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" and talked about how the Pirates should trade Skenes if they cannot build a contender around him. He also noted that they could likely lose him anyway in 2030 when he hits free agency. The Pirates are far and away from being a contender and have not given Skenes a reason to stay, so there is an argument to trade him now when his value is the highest.

Despite MLB insider Jon Heyman revealing that the Pirates have no intention of trading Skenes, FanSided's Katrina Stebbins proposed this potential package that could be enough to land him:

  • Dodgers receive: Paul Skenes
  • Pirates receive: Dalton Rushing, Josue De Paula, Zyhir Hope, Kellon Lindsey, River Ryan and Hyeseong Kim

Rushing, De Paula and Hope are the Dodgers' top three prospects, according to MLB Pipeline. Lindsey is the team's No. 7 prospect. Ryan is the No. 9 prospect in the organization. Rushing, Ryan and Kim have already debuted and could become key players for the Pirates for years to come.

It would take a historical package to get Skenes out of Pittsburgh with four-plus years of club control. This package fits the bill. The Pirates may not be considering trading Skenes right now, but hearing this offer may at least force them to think about it before saying no. Kim has impressed so far and Rushing could be their catcher of the future. The other prospects are all highly regarded in the Dodgers organization.
