MLB insider throws cold water on Padres Mason Miller trade rumors

The San Diego Padres could opt to trade a few of their top players at the Aug. 3 deadline if things go south. 

Of course, the Padres All-Star everyone is talking about is closer Mason Miller. 

Without a doubt, Miller is the top reliever in baseball. There is not a more dominant player at their respective position in the sport. 

But we might want to pump the brakes on Miller trade discussions. At least for now. Anything can happen with less than two weeks before the deadline. 

"The San Diego Padres will listen on star reliever Mason Miller. But that doesn’t mean a trade is likely," FanSided's Robert Murray wrote. "And at this point, I’m skeptical that the Padres will ultimately move him." 

Padres need incredibly strong offer to trade Miller

Per Murray, the Padres and president of baseball operations A.J. Preller would have to be "blown away" by an offer for Miller.  

"But Preller will do what Preller does. He’ll listen on Miller, talk to teams about various scenarios that would help the Padres compete now and in future seasons, and canvass the market," Murray added.

The right-hander has a 0.83 ERA in 62 games with the Padres following last summer's trade from the Athletics.

"But the Padres would need to be blown away to trade Miller, and while that could happen, especially in a sellers’ market, there’s skepticism in league circles that such an offer will come," wrote Murray. 

It remains to be seen whether the Padres will seriously consider a Miller trade. A contending team would have to offer a haul in return. 

San Diego is under no time crunch to move Miller, who has three years of club control past 2026.
