The Boston Red Sox’ main goals this offseason are to re-sign Alex Bregman, get another superstar slugger, and trade for a starting pitcher to create a 1-2 punch with Garrett Crochet. However, it seems a fourth goal has arisen for them.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the Sox are open to creating the latest super bullpen, giving help to their top relievers in Garrett Whitlock and Aroldis Chapman.
“Though the idea is further down their list of priorities, the Boston Red Sox are considering the addition of a high-leverage reliever to create a version of a super bullpen, people familiar with the club’s thinking said,” Rosenthal wrote.
Rosenthal continued, revealing which free-agent relievers the Sox may target to strengthen their bullpen.
"But as The Athletic recently reported, they hold some level of interest in free agent Devin Williams. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them continue to at least monitor the market for other proven, high-leverage relievers, which includes Robert Suarez, Pete Fairbanks, Ryan Helsley, Luke Weaver and Raisel Iglesias,” Rosenthal revealed.
Any of these guys would be major upgrades for the Sox’ bullpen, but Robert Suarez probably sits atop the list. He’s a two-time All-Star who finished this season with a 2.97 ERA, 75 Ks, a WHIP of 0.904, and 40 saves in 70 games. Getting a guy like him for the seventh or eighth inning would be huge, and having Suarez, Whitlock, and Chapman in the final three innings would be borderline unfair.
Hopefully, the Sox do pursue at least one or two of these players. They need to maximize their chances, and going all out this offseason is the way to do it.
