Despite focusing on their starting rotation over the offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves in panic mode. The two new additions, Cody Ponce and Max Scherzer, are both dealing with issues.
Ponce will be out for the season after he tried to field a ball off the mound on March 30 against the Colorado Rockies. He tore his ACL, which is a crushing blow for a guy looking to make his mark back in the majors.
For Scherzer, his injury isn't as severe, as he is dealing with forearm discomfort, and the club is bracing for an IL stint.

With Ponce out and Scherzer likely out for a few, the starting rotation is getting bleaker. While they still have Dylan Cease and Kevin Gausman, it would not hurt to go out and grab a backend starter.
Luckily for them, there are a few still out there on the free agent market. And Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer makes the case for Toronto to go out and sign former Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito.
"Shane Bieber and Trey Yesavage should rejoin the rotation in the next few weeks, and Alejandro Kirk should be back behind the dish sometime in May. That said, Toronto's playoff odds have already fallen pretty far on FanGraphs. Injuries can have that sort of effect, and the AL East will show the Blue Jays no mercy. They need to be on the phone to Lucas Giolito now."
Even with Bieber and Yesavage emerging from the IL soon, another arm wouldn't help. And for Giolito's case, he is coming off one of the better seasons he has had in quite some time.
Now, it might take some time for Giolito to ramp up, but if Toronto wants to go out and sign another starting pitcher, it makes sense for them to phone one of the few guys left that wouldn't cost them prospects.
