Following wild cinema scenes all over the world, resulting in high police and security presence to prevent any kind of commotion at screenings of A Minecraft Movie, a South Australian cinema has taken the opposite approach, hosting a special Chicken Jockey screening of the film for viewers to go wild.
The screening, which offers $10 tickets, a costume competition, and an appearance from Chicken Jockey himself, encourages popcorn throwing. But, whilst some people think it’s a great idea, others believe it’s enabling this poor behavior.
“Dress up, say the lines, yell, cheer and throw popcorn”
Odeon Star Cinema in Adelaide has announced that they’ll be hosting a specific Chicken Jockey screening of A Minecraft Movie, in response to extreme scenes at cinemas Australia-wide.
The announcement was posted to TikTok, garnering a huge response.
“This Thursday, we are holding a special Chicken Jockey session for A Minecraft Movie,” they say in the video.
“We want people to have fun in a safe and supportive environment. Any behavior that puts others at risk will not be tolerated.”
The screening is advertised as being ‘wild, safe, and unforgettable’, with security presence, and bag checks on entry.
“We are encouraging fun, and not vandalism,” he says.
“We have put precautions in place, and there will be security onsite conducting bag checks upon entry to the cinema.”
Whilst they’re encouraging popcorn throwing, the cinema has made it clear it’s limited to just that, with actions seen at other locations – such as throwing drinks, roast chickens, and real live chickens – deemed completely unacceptable.
“We want you to dress up, say the lines, yell, cheer and throw popcorn – popcorn only,” he says.
“If anyone takes it too far, they will be immediately removed, and further action will be taken. What we don’t want is for someone to take it too far, and put others at risk, or damage the cinema.”
People are divided
Many commenters on the post were thrilled with the idea, saying that more cinemas should have taken the opportunity to ‘do it right’.
“Now this is good, they are chill about the trend,” said one commenter.
“This is the way to do it!!!! I hope this is very successful for you,” another person said.
“This is such a good idea bro,” said a third.
“Oh my gosh someone is actually doing it right,” another person agreed.
But, not everyone agreed, with others saying it enables this poor behaviour which has left so many scared to go to the cinema.
“This is the same perspective as the purge,” said one person.
“Tell me you don’t know kids without telling me. They’re gonna do everything but throw popcorn,” another pointed out.
“THIS IS JUST GOING TO CAUSE MORE OUTBURSTS OF CHICKEN JOCKEY MASSACRES,” said another commenter.
“We want to see people having fun in the Cinema”
Whilst the cinema’s team has seen the critiques, manager Joe Proud told Kidspot that’s exactly why they’re doing it.
“We came up with the idea after seeing many Cinemas putting up signs banning people from reacting to the scene in the movie,” he said.
“While we definitely do not condone some of the behaviour we have all seen happening in some cinemas, we are trying to encourage a safe and supportive space to engage with and enjoy a movie with likeminded people.
“We want to see people having fun in the Cinema by interacting with their favourite moments, whether that be by saying the lines in the film or throwing some popcorn around the cinema.
“We don’t think it is much different to what people have done for decades during screenings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
