BYU legend Jimmer Fredette makes major announcement about basketball future, retirement

Jimmer Fredette was one of the most exciting college basketball players of all time.

His professional career took him around the globe, including to Paris for the United States 3x3 team at the Olympics.

And now, Fredette is hanging up his sneaks. He officially announced his retirement from the game on Wednesday.

"This game and my love for it has shaped me into the person I am today and for that I am forever grateful," Fredette wrote on social media.

Fredette began his bucket-getting days as a high school legend in Glens Falls, New York.

From there, it was BYU, where Fredette took the country by storm.

He scored 28.9 points per game in 2010-11, won national player of the year and led the Cougars to the Sweet 16.

Fredette went No. 10 overall in the 2011 NBA Draft and played for the Kings, Bulls, Pelicans, Knicks and Suns.

He went on to be a legend in the Chinese Basketball Association, including games of 75 and 70 points and an MVP award.

Fredette led the U.S. to gold medals in the 2022 FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup and 2023 Pan American Games and a silver at the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

His career is one of basketball wonder. He may not have been an NBA star, but Fredette left fans in awe with his feats of scoring and shooting from all over basketball courts all over the world.

With a first name so memorable he didn't even need to go by his last name, Jimmer will go down as a basketball immortal.

"I owe a lot of who I am today to this game and it's not easy to say goodbye as a player," Fredette wrote. "But the time has come."
