Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Abner Uribe suspended after hitting WWE-style crotch-chop as strikeout celebration

1 hour ago 3

While it must be an exhilarating feeling to throw an inning-ending strikeout while runners are on base, Abner Uribe took things a little too far, according to the MLB (and Uribe's manager).

During Tuesday's 6-0 shutout win over the St. Louis Cardinals, the Milwaukee Brewers' relief pitcher celebrated quite emphatically towards the away team's dugout. Many fans who were familiar with the WWE had seen that celebration before from famous wrestling stable D-Generation X.

The MLB did not find Uribe's moves on the mound to be that funny and suspended the pitcher for one game on Friday evening. Uribe has appealed the ruling, and it remains in the air what will definitively happen to the pitcher.

Here's the latest on the penalty for Uribe's nontraditional strikeout celebration, and its ties to WWE group D-Generation X.

During the eighth inning of Tuesday's shutout win over the Cardinals, Uribe was able to get an inning-ending strikeout on first-baseman Alec Burleson. While it was a full count, Milwaukee's pitcher did not shy away from showing the fans what the out meant to him.

Here's a look at what appears to be a mimic of D-Generation X's celebration in the WWE.

It's safe to say Brewers manager Alec Murphy was far from happy with his reliever's eighth-innings antics, and expressed that during the postgame press conference. Here's the full clip regarding his thoughts on Uribe's "unacceptable" celebration.

On Friday afternoon, the MLB shared that they would be suspending Uribe for one game and imposing an undisclosed fine, according to the league. Uribe did appeal the penalty, so the suspension and fine will be on hold until the appeal process is complete.

Who is D-Generation X?

D-Generation X was originally a WWE trio that was established in 1997, according to ESPN. Triple H, Shawn Michaels, and Chyna were the group's first three members. The entourage became popular after their famous "crotch chop" celebration after event wins. The group, later including X-Pac, Billy Gunn, and Road Dogg, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2019 for their exciting appearances during the WWE's Attitude Era.

Here is a GIF showing the group celebrating in the ring.

That'll get ya punished every dang time, fella. My ma grounded me no less than 5x as a kiddo for the DX chop to the crotch. LOL https://t.co/8uQ8OsrrRy pic.twitter.com/o5Kodtctz3

Many MLB fans who had watched the WWE growing up instantly recalled the past when they saw Uribe hitting the celebration. While Joel Embiid has also hit this celebration in the past, D-Generation X was the group that first popularized the movement.
