Mid-20s relative agrees to cat-sit while the pawrents are away, but breaks every rule possible: ‘I checked footage and she threw a party AND had overnight guests!’

AIO??? Brothers finances sister agreed to cat sit for us. Threw parties, had overnight guests, didn't stay the remainder of evenings and let us know she won't be staying the remainder of the week. We need to cut our trip short and family thinks I should be nicer to her. family/in-laws

I'm not taking anyone to small claims, I was just upset. Still upset, but less so after sleeping.

  • They say “sleep on it” for a reason - sleep is like a reset to the mind. But honestly? We're just as livid reading about this experience. Lucky for this woman she can try and stay calm after sleeping a good night… We're not sure we sould be so calm.

I live in a highly desirable part of a big city.

We usually have college kids we know who live at home (we're in a HCOL city) watch our cat when we're out of town for a decent daily rate, though a couple of them offer to do it for free since they get a break from their parents, get to use a nice gaming system, and walk to a bunch of nice bars and restaurants.

My partner and I were going to an anniversary trip and my brothers fiancés sister said she'd be excited to stay.

  • 08

She loves our neighborhood and lives with her grandma so it would be a nice break.

  • 09

We were planning to pay her $25/night and she said it would be great. She's in her mid-late 20s Rules were simple: stay the night so the cat would not be lonely, no overnight guests, no loud sounds past 10pm due to quiet hours.

  • 10

We also asked that she send us daily updates. For the last couple days. she hasn't been responding or reaching out and I got worried and decided to check ring footage..which I hadn't been checking for her privacy.

  • 11

Turns out she hasn't been home in 24 hours!!!! She also hadn't spend the night before that either like she agreed.

  • 12

Our cat hadn't had any food and I freaked out. We finally got a hold of her and she was so nonchalant about not being there.

She went to our house to feed our cat and showed us footage of the house like I had asked and I saw 1) his water was super low and 2) there were blankets in the couch as if someone had been sleeping there.

I asked and she said ofc not. I checked footage and she threw a party AND had overnight guests!!!

She then let me know that she was uncomfortable that I was checking footage now and would not be spending anymore time there and left.

We're now scrambling to get someone else to feed our cat but will probably just be leaving tomorrow, forfeiting all our hotel costs.

  • 21

I'm livid and want to take her to small claims for the hotel costs and flight changes.

  • 22

Brothers fiancé said she would leave him if I do that and my family is telling me to forgive and forget and be nicer.

  • These two sisters don't sound like the sharpest claws on the cat… One agrees to cat-sit but breaks every rule possible, and not even taking care of the cat correctly. And the other is trying to “defend” her sister from taking responsibility by threatening a breakup with her partner, that had nothing to do with the situation? Honestly, this is ridiculous.

  • 23

Running-With-Cakes She sounds like an utter selfish as

  • 24

OP Wawawamba I'm honestly blown away by the selfishness. Everyone keeps telling me that "he's just a cat he'll be fine. She had people over but the apartment is fine" is making me feel like I'm going crazy. She agreed to stay in the house overnight and feed my cat and not have overnight guests. If she didn't like it she shouldn't have agreed to it

  • 25

Ok-Benefit197 Why would your family want your brother to be with someone who behaved like that.

  • 26

OP Wawawamba It's his finances sister not his finance. His fiance is really sweet but my mom has never liked her. Maybe she was always onto something

  • 27

Running-With-Cakes It amazes me the length people will go to in order to justify and appease bad behaviour. If she left her fiancé she'd be doing him a favour. It wouldn't surprise me if you said everyone walks on egg shells around her and she walks all over everyone. Sounds like she wanted a free party house and didn't give a shit about the cat

  • 28

OP Wawawamba I can't believe she would threaten their nearly decade long relationship to protect her shoty sisters sty behavior. And they're painting me out like I'm the mean one for getting upset. I didn't scream or yell or raise my tone, I just said that we were paying her to stay the night and expected her to do that.

  • 29

Natalias Maze Ask the others if if wasnt "family", if it had been a regular person you hired to do a job would they expect you to just let it go? Then remind them family should be held to a higher standard, cause its worse. She's family (essentially, through future marriage) and despite you being her family SHE completely disrespected YOU. If you should forgive her cause shes family shouldnt she have not done any of that shit cause you're family? And if she shows no remorse you can't forgive it.

  • 30

OP Wawawamba You're echoing everything I've saying. The whole thing is insane

  • 31

tinselt Well the good news is you won't have to deal with her forever because their marriage is doomed to fail anyway. I say go for it, at least talk to a lawyer to see if you have a case.

  • 32

OP Wawawamba They've been saying for 10 years so I don't think that's ending anytime soon. Fiamce has always been sweet though I know they've had a lot of issues

  • 33

Sammiesam123988 Did you ever ask her why? Im super curious

  • 34

OP Wawawamba She said she was no longer comfortable after talking to us on the phone. Didn't have a reason why and we're really confused by it because all we did was remind her that we asked her to spend the nights and not have overnight guests, which she agreed to. We suspect she wasn't planning on staying the duration of our trip regardless

  • 35

Powerful_Put_6977 You had an arrangement, a contract if you will, even if it wasn't written down and signed, she new what she had effectively signed up for. 1. Feed cat & keep it company 2. No overnight guests 3. No parties & no loud sounds. She broke every single one of those. If you now have to cancel/rearrange your plans and that involves costs of same, I would definitely sue her for those costs at least. If Brother's fiancé threatens to leave him over this, then she is one weak willed indivi

  • 36

OP Wawawamba I actually do have it written down in texts! She confirmed the rules multiple times. According to my states laws that's enough to take her to small claims court. I guess lucky for me she was more of a texter than a phone caller so I have documentation for everything

  • 37

Playful-Meeting-1460 Why not hire a replacement cat sitter? Go on Rover or your local FB groups and ask for recommendations. Surely that would be cheaper than flying home?

  • 38

OP Wawawamba No idea how I'd get a key to them since she left the key inside

  • 39

BrainySmurf Chalk it up to lesson learned. You had an agreement, she stomped all over it. Never trust her again. You can say that too "We're chalking this up as lesson learned. I regret trusting someone who deliberately broke our trust. She is not a child, she knew but chose her own selfishness. We will not forget her deliberate actions and we will not forget that none of you feel that her breaking our trust is worthy of us being disappointed and angry. That's on you. Her actions and lies are he

  • 40

OP Wawawamba Why should we eat all the costs though and have our trip cut in half? It feels unfair

  • 41

Sammiesam123988 No i meant why your mom didnt like fiance.

  • 42

OP Wawawamba OH. She never really said. She's kind of a boy mom and my brother is the golden child sol just assumed it was some extension of that. She was pretty bummed out when he said he was proposing and didn't elaborate when I asked why
