Michigan parent Kirk Herbstreit 'blown away' by Biff Poggi's actions after Sherrone Moore firing

Michigan’s sudden coaching search has placed the program in unfamiliar territory, but interim leadership has drawn praise from an unexpected perspective.

On Friday's ESPN College GameDay, Kirk Herbstreit said he has been “blown away” by the actions of interim coach Biff Poggi in the aftermath of Sherrone Moore’s firing at Michigan Wolverines. His perspective is personal as well as professional.

Herbstreit's son, Chase, is a quarterback on Michigan’s roster, placing the longtime broadcaster in regular communication with other parents as the team prepares for its upcoming bowl game.

“For me, it’s been interesting,” Herbstreit said. “I’ve just been on a bunch of Zooms with the rest of the parents, listening in and trying to watch Biff Poggi try to navigate these uncharted waters.”

Herbstreit said the coaching staff was thrust into an unexpected situation but credited Poggi for keeping the locker room.

“I’ll just say, as a parent, I’ve been blown away by Biff Poggi and what he’s done,” Herbstreit said. “What he’s done to be able to pull this team together, almost like a father figure, to me.”

The players learned of Moore’s dismissal during an abrupt team meeting last week. As the search continues for Michigan’s next head coach, uncertainty remains around staff retention and roster continuity. Herbstreit praised Michigan for its handling of the transition as the Wolverines prepare to face the Texas Longhorns on New Year’s Eve.

“These players are trying to lock in and block out all that noise,” Herbstreit said. “I tip my cap to them and look forward to seeing how they respond.”
