The Michigan Wolverines football program has made a major quarterback decision, officially handing the starting job to freshman Tommy Carr and moving former five-star recruit Bryce Underwood to the bench.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham announced Monday that Carr would remain Michigan's starter for the "foreseeable future" following an impressive performance in Saturday's 28-21 victory over Rutgers.

Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, delivered the best performance of his young career, completing 81% of his passes for 266 yards and a touchdown. He also added 54 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, including the game-winning nine-yard score with 4:24 remaining in the fourth quarter. Michigan is now 5-3 on the season with losses to Iowa, Minnesota and Indiana.

The decision is stunning development for Underwood, who arrived in Ann Arbor as the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2025 class. He famously flipped his commitment from LSU to Michigan, reportedly receiving a record-breaking $12.5 million NIL package in the process.

Despite the investment and expectations, Underwood has struggled throughout his time as Michigan's starter before being replaced by Carr during the team's Oct. 17 victory over Penn State.

For Underwood, the question now becomes whether he can reclaim the starting job or if Michigan has found its quarterback of the future. Either way, the nation's No. 1 QB will likely hit the transfer portal.

Carr, the younger brother of Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr, has completed 72.1% of his passes for 503 yards in four appearances this season. He will now lead the Wolverines into one of their biggest games of the season.

Michigan hosts rival Michigan State on Saturday. Kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Peacock.
