Michael Cole has now revealed that a WWE rule that the company has had for the last 36 years, is now at an end under Triple H. The rule has finally ended now, officially.
Vince McMahon made the WWE rule back in 1989 - it is now over as confirmed by Michael Cole under Triple H
In 1989, Vince McMahon changed WWE and the world of professional wrestling, by coining a new term and making it official in WWE. Throughout the 80s, he had been referring to the programming in his company as Sports Entertainment. However, it was in a meeting with the New Jersey senate in 1989 that WWE, then known as WWF, first coined the phrase Sports Entertainment officially, letting it be know that they were not in the pro wrestling business.
This was crucial for Vince McMahon as he was establishing that it was not a real competitive sport and thus was not subject to all the regulations that came with any such sport.
He was successful, and the rest is history. Since then, at least under him, for any star to refer to wrestling or pro wrestling on WWE shows was a hard rule that could never be broken. However, since he took a step away, and Triple H took over, references to pro wrestling have been far more common than anything else.
At Saturday Night's Main Event though, Sports Entertainment was officially laid to rest with John Cena's career. At the end of the match, the representative of this new era of Triple H, Gunther, defeated John Cena, as he ended his career.
Michael Cole stated that the era of sports entertaiment was over and pro wrestling had destroyed it.
"Ladies and gentlemen, tonight, professional wrestling destroyed sports entertainment."Whether this means there will be any further changes to programming or not remains to be seen, but Triple H has already made a huge announcement. Whatever be the case, Michael Cole will be there to see the birth of the new era.
