Miami Dolphins predicted to replace Tua Tagovailoa with electric 31-TD SEC passer

The Miami Dolphins are in the midst of a season that could prove to be a turning point for the organization.

After making the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, Miami missed out on the postseason in 2024 in what was a disappointing result. And, there has been no shortage of turmoil inside the building over the past few years and the team has already had a players-only meeting after one game this season, which was a blowout loss.

If the Dolphins fall short of expectations once again in 2025 there could be major changes coming in 2026, especially at head coach, where Mike McDaniels' seat figures to be red hot.

Should Miami turn the page, they could also look to do so at quarterback, where Tua Tagovailoa is in his sixth year as the team's starter.

There have been some impressive moments for Tagovailoa, but he simply hasn't been able to get Miami over the hump and there are lingering concerns about his future thanks to several concussions.

Knowing all that, Pro Football & Sports Network's James Fragoza has the Dolphins landing the No. 10 overall pick in next year's draft and predicts Miami will take Tagovailoa's replacement by drafting electric SEC quarterback LaNorris Sellers.

Here's Fragoza's take on the projected selection of the South Carolina quarterback:

LaNorris Sellers is a 6’3″, 242-pound physical specimen who possesses elite arm strength capable of launching 70-yard bombs and running back mobility that is a force to be reckoned with on the move.

While he needs to sharpen his anticipation and field vision, Sellers possesses one of the highest ceilings in the entire 2026 NFL Draft QB class and is trending upward on the operational side of his game. He’s also the complete opposite of Tua Tagovailoa from a prospect point of view, which the Dolphins may want.

While still raw and in need of development, Sellers has all the tools you want in an NFL quarterback. He has a big arm capable of making all the throws, but he's also an elite athlete capable of changing a game with his legs.

Over 17 games at South Carolina, Sellers has completed 65.4% of his passes for 2,957 yards, rushed for 773 yards and has scored 31 total touchdowns.

In his first full season as a starter in 2024, Sellers threw for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns to seven picks and tallied a completion rate of 65.6%. He also displayed his athleticism with 674 yards and seven scores on the ground.

Sellers could absolutely be one of the first quarterbacks off the board in 2026 if he can cement himself as a top prospect with a strong performance in 2025.

However, there's also a strong chance that Sellers will opt to stay for at least one more year given his lack of experience as a starter.

Clearing the path for Sellers to start in Miami will be difficult, as Tagovailoa's deal is massive, which will make him difficult to trade or cut.

The first feasible out in Tua's deal comes in 2027, when Miami would incur a dead-cap charge of $13.4 million and a savings of $40 million with a post-June 1 cut or trade.

With Sellers figuring to be a project at the next level, the Dolphins could stick with Tua for another season, which will give the team more time to explore ways to unload him in anticipation of the South Carolina star taking over in 2027.
