Mets, White Sox each said no to 1 specific player in major trade

Everyone has known the New York Mets wanted Luis Robert Jr. for a long time.

This offseason, they finally got him in a trade -- but that deal wasn't far from looking quite different.

First, for reference: The trade ended up being Robert for Luisangel Acuna and minor league pitcher Truman Pauley.

But according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, each team had a plan for the deal that didn't look exactly like this one.

Heyman writes that the White Sox wanted Brett Baty in the deal, but the Mets said no.

Then he writes that the Mets suggested that they could give up Mark Vientos instead, and the White Sox said no.

It was always going to involve Robert, but that spot Acuna and Pauley ended up in was more fluid.

As far as Baty, "the Mets quickly rebuffed that," Heyman writes.

He adds that the White Sox didn't want Vientos because "they weren't looking for a hit-first righty batter."

Acuna ended up being the compromise as a versatile major leaguer with a more balanced skillset.

Meanwhile, Baty is an everyday starter for the Mets against right-handed pitching, while Vientos is still trying to regain the ability that had him arrive from the minors with so much promise.
