Mets trade idea cuts ties with projected $60 million breakout starter

The New York Mets' starting rotation has been the best in baseball so far. They have a 2.70 team ERA, but some changes could be coming to the rotation soon.

The Mets have relied on Clay Holmes, Kodai Senga, Griffin Canning, Tylor Megill and David Peterson to lead them while Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas work their way back from injury. The group has been phenomenal, but that does not change the fact that Manaea and Montas will return eventually.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller suggested that the team could cut ties with Canning in order to create room and land an upgrade at a different position.

"As the impending free agent of the bunch, Canning is surely the lowest hanging fruit," wrote Miller. "He has been excellent thus far, but he had a 4.78 ERA over the previous six seasons with the Angels. He'll likely hit the trade block as soon as either Manaea or Montas is back."

Canning was traded to the Atlanta Braves in the deal that sent Jorge Soler to the Los Angeles Angels. After being non-tendered by the Braves, he signed a one-year, $4.2 million deal with the Mets. He will be a free agent after the season, and Spotrac projects him to sign a six-year, $60 million deal.

He has a 2.50 ERA through seven starts, and if he keeps it up, he will demand more than $60 million on the open market. The Mets could be looking for center field upgrades at the deadline, and with reinforcement on the way, Canning could be trade bait.
