The New York Mets took a low-risk offseason chance on a former first-round outfielder.
But the move didn't work out, and they released him on Sunday.
Billy McKinney is now a free agent. The 30-year old was once taken 24th overall in the 2013 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
McKinney has played in the majors for the Blue Jays, Yankees, Brewers, Mets, Dodgers, Athletics and Pirates.
He's a career .209 hitter at the MLB level.
He hit five home runs for the Mets back in 39 games in 2021.

McKinney's best MLB season was 2019 with the Blue Jays, when he slugged 12 home runs in 84 games.
The lefty hitter had suited up in 30 games for Triple-A Syracuse this season. He struggled to the tune of a .184 average and three home runs.
It's hard to see McKinney getting back to the bigs at this point.
He could likely get another minor league opportunity if he wants it. Otherwise, retirement could be looming.
