Mets' new trade rumor involves Willy Adames, Marcus Semien and a change for Bo Bichette

The New York Mets' season isn't going how they would've hoped.

That has mostly led to talk of selling before this summer's trade deadline, but there's also another fascinating path available to the Mets, one floated by ESPN's Buster Olney on Tuesday morning.

Olney wonders about the Mets acquiring Willy Adames from the San Francisco Giants. The trade wouldn't be as much about this year as it would be about the future with Adames on a long-term contract.

The ESPN writer speculates that Marcus Semien going the other way could make the deal happen, and that it could also get Bo Bichette moved to second base.

Here's what Olney wrote on X on Tuesday morning:

"Pure speculation, but worth exploring for the Mets and Giants: A deal involving Willy Adames and Marcus Semien. The Giants would have to eat a good chunk of money in Adames's deal to make it happen, but Adames could play third, Bichette could move to second, and Semien would return to the Bay Area. SF has signaled a willingness to listen to offers for Adames, Chapman, Devers."

Adames would be a risk for the Mets, because he hasn't maintained a steady level of play since signing his big contract with the Giants.

Money, though, isn't a huge obstacle for the Mets. And this might be the best chance to buy low on a guy like Adames. It may not work, but it may also be worth the risk.

Semien came to New York this offseason in a trade for Brandon Nimmo, and the second baseman seems mostly in decline at this point. The Giants would take him more as a swap than as an upgrade. They'd be doing this to get out of Adames' contract.

If the Mets got to move Bichette to the likely-more-favorable second base because of this deal, that wouldn't be bad, either.

It's certainly a fascinating idea and one worth keeping an eye on.
