Giants 6-foot-4 rookie garnering a ton of hype for potential starting role

The New York Giants are set to kick off training camp in a little over a month, as rookies will report to The Greenbrier Resort Sports Performance Center in West Virginia on July 23, with the rest of the roster following on July 28.

With John Harbaugh taking over as head coach and the Giants making a ton of changes throughout the roster, training camp will be a time for the organization to see what the new team looks like under Harbaugh.

That said, one position that faces some uncertainty heading into camp is receiver. With Malik Nabers' status for Week 1 uncertain due to a full meniscus repair, the Giants have added a few veterans to compete for playing time, including Odell Beckham Jr., JuJu Smith-Schuster, Darnell Mooney, Calvin Austin, and others.

Though Beckham and Smith-Schuster were once great receivers, and Austin does ignite some excitement, there is a certain rookie in the position group who could find himself in a starting role come the opening game.

Malachi Fields could be in line for starting spot

Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski is buying the hype around Giants third-round pick Malachi Fields, listing him as a rookie who could emerge as a starter this year.

"Nabers will be treated as the Giants' WR1 whenever he's cleared to return. Plenty must still be decided within the rest of the group. Though it's difficult to envision Fields not being a big part of the team's plans this season, considering the potential to move past the majority of the group after the upcoming campaign," Sobleski wrote.

Fields isn't the most explosive or speedy receiver, but his 6-foot-4 frame makes him a lethal red-zone threat, playmaker in jump-ball situations, and run blocker. The 22-year-old tallied two 800-yard campaigns with Virginia in 2023 and 2024 and averaged 17.5 yards per reception with Notre Dame in 2025, his final college season.

Mooney and Darius Slayton will likely be standing in Fields' way to the No. 2 receiver role, but even if he can't beat the veterans out, the talented rookie should definitely find a role on special teams and earn some playing time in the receiver rotation.

Additionally, Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown envisions Fields playing early because of his consistency, so it's clear the franchise has a plan for him right out the gate.

"He was the same guy at Virginia and the same worker at Notre Dame," Brown said of Fields during a press conference on May 10 via Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com. "Seeing high levels of consistency over multiple years gives you comfort in what you're going to see in Year 1. That's gonna be a low start-up cost when it comes to getting the player on the field and contributing for us.

Overall, offensive coordinator Matt Nagy would be foolish to waste Fields' size and skill set on the bench. If the Fighting Irish product can turn in a nice training camp, it's only a matter of time till he's the starting receiver opposite Nabers on New York's offense.
