New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza made an important decision regarding Starling Marte’s playing future.
Marte has been with the Mets since 2022 and was an All-Star in his first year in New York. However, the outfielder has struggled to begin the 2025 Major League Baseball season, but despite his struggles, Mendoza says Marte will continue to get opportunities.
“He’s been an elite player in this game,” Mendoza said. “It’s not an easy role to be in when you’re used to playing every day, it takes time to adjust. I just have to continue giving him at-bats, he’s a good player. The way the ball continues to jump off his bat, the bat speed, it’s there -- he’ll get going here pretty soon.”
Marte will continue to bat in the middle of the Mets' lineup when New York faces a left-handed pitcher. However, he is a platoon role with the likes of Jeff McNeil, Brett Baty, and Luisangel Acuña, who are all hitting the ball better than him.

Although Marte is off to a slow start, Mendoza is confident the slugger will start to get hot soon and be a key part of New York’s success this season, as the Mets had expectations of competing for a World Series this season.
Marte is in the final year of his four-year, $78 million deal with the Mets. To begin the 2025 Major League Baseball season, Marte is hitting .200 with 2 home runs and 12 RBIs in 75 at-bats.
The Mets are 29-18 and atop the NL East.
