Mets' Luis Robert Jr. trade finally solves centerfield crisis with long-awaited White Sox move

The New York Mets spent essentially the entire 2025 MLB season linked to a trade for Chicago White Sox centerfield Luis Robert Jr.

It took until the final hour of Jan. 20, 2026 to get the deal done, but Robert is finally coming to Queens.

ESPN's Jeff Passan broke the news late Tuesday night that the Mets are getting Robert in return for two young players.

The full trade:

  • Mets get: OF Luis Robert Jr.
  • White Sox get: IF Luisangel Acuña and RHP Truman Pauley

It's not a bad haul for Chicago, but this is all about the Mets.

They couldn't solve centerfield at all in 2025, and when they couldn't land Robert by the trade deadline, they got Cedric Mullins from the Orioles instead. That didn't really work, and New York entered the offseason still needing to fill that spotlight position in the middle of the outfield.

Robert is a 28-year old from Cuba who has made an All-Star Team and won a Gold Glove, although he hasn't been his fully prodigious self the last couple seasons.

In 2025, he hit .223 with 14 homers and 33 stolen bases.

The freakish physical tools are still there, but the Mets will be hoping for more consistency.

They'll take him at a relatively affordable $20 million salary for 2026. They also have club control for 2027 if they want it, as Robert's contract features a club option for 2027 at that same $20 million price tag.

The Mets needed to make another splash this offseason, and getting Robert has done just that.
