The New York Mets have some work to do this offseason when it comes to rebuilding their team. After a nightmare 2026 season, the Mets are likely to need to spend a lot more money and add talent to be a real contender next year.

Just about anything would be helpful for this Mets team. For this Mets team, there are a few areas of the team that might not have any real needs, like the outfield. But the same can be said about the corner infield spots.

That's why, when MLB.com's Mark Feinsand links the Mets to former Philadelphia Phillies 1B/3B free agent Alec Bohm, it doesn't make any sense.

Mets linked to Alec Bohm for potential free agent addition that wouldn't make sense

"Owner Steve Cohen could look past the money owed to Polanco if he believes Bohm is a good fit for the Mets, who are coming off two straight seasons without reaching the postseason," Feinsand writes.

While the Mets could use some more offensive firepower, someone like Bohm wouldn't really provide that. He's not much of a power hitter, and his inconsistencies on offense aren't worth investing in.

He consistently hits into double-plays and is not remotely trustworthy enough to be a key cog in an offense. Bohm makes more sense as a one- or two-year rental for a club looking to build a contender on a budget.

Bohm can play first or third base, but considering the Mets have invested in Jorge Polanco and Bo Bichette, both of whom are likely back for 2027, signing Bohm wouldn't really do the Mets any good.

If Bichette decided to opt out of his $42 million deal, which seems unlikely, then maybe Bohm could be a budget option for the infield for a season or two.

The Mets don't really make sense as a potential Bohm landing spot. They have already invested a ton in their infield; they don't really have a spot for Bohm, and even if they were to add someone, a more versatile option with better speed and defense would make more sense than a player like Bohm.
