The San Diego Padres were eliminated by the Milwaukee Brewers in four games of the 2026 NLDS, but it was one of the best series of the postseason thus far. For this Padres team, there is reason to have hope for the 2027 MLB season and beyond.

So, with new ownership, if they're ready to spend, the Padres should look to acquire some big-league talent to bolster a lineup and roster that could use help. While starting pitching is a huge need, the lineup cannot be ignored.

That's why MLB.com's Mark Feinsand linked the Padres to New York Yankees free agent second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr., who he noted would fit "perfectly" onto the Padres roster.

Padres linked to Jazz Chisholm Jr. amid potential perfect fit on MLB roster

"San Diego could use some left-handed power, slugging only .384 from that side of the plate in 2026, which ranked 23rd in the Majors," Feinsand writes. "Second base is one of the logical spots for the Padres to upgrade, as they could move Jake Cronenworth to first base to open the spot for somebody such as Chisholm. As for the swag that stood out like a sore thumb at times with the Yankees, Chisholm would fit perfectly with the Padres' roster."

Chisholm joining the Padres would make a lot of sense for San Diego, as he'd instantly become a key starter for this team, providing a new offensive presence this lineup lacks.

While there are some quality left-handed sluggers on this team, someone like Chisholm, who brings both power and base-running upside, would be a very appealing free agent option to pursue.

He might be a more polarizing figure, and the Padres might have already invested a lot in their infield. But if they want to seriously contend for a World Series, this roster needs help, and Chisholm could provide just that.

This past season for the Yankees, Chisholm hit 19 home runs, posted 3.5 fWAR, and had a .711 OPS with 42 stolen bases. It was not an elite season, but it was the kind of year that is worth investing in.

From a lineup, defensive, and culture standpoint, adding Chisholm to this Padres team would make a lot of sense. The only question will be whether the Padres want to meet what's likely a very high asking price if he doesn't opt for a one-year prove-it deal.
