Mets' Juan Soto needs 1 hit to join Mickey Mantle, Mel Ott in 3-player MLB history

Juan Soto is one hit away from joining an impressive duo to form an even more impressive trio.

Soto enters the New York Mets' game on Wednesday night with 999 career hits.

With 1,000, Soto will have reached 1,000 hits, 200 home runs and 700 walks before turning 27 years old.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale writes that only Mickey Mantle and Mel Ott have previously achieved that.

Soto won't turn 27 until Oct. 25, so he's well ahead of schedule here.

To this point, Soto has 215 homers and 830 walks, well above those measuring sticks for this statistic, too.

Apparently, a player has to play in New York City to get this done.

Ott starred in the Polo Grounds for the New York Giants, while Mantle of course is a New York Yankees legend.

Now it's the Mets' turn, a franchise that didn't even exist when Ott or Mantle turned 27.

Soto has picked it up as his first season in the Big Apple has gone along. He's now hitting .252/.392/.469 with 14 doubles, 14 homers, 37 RBI and a league-best 61 walks compared to 51 strikeouts.

The Mets have a long way to go with Soto, but he's already proving the generationally impressive fast start his career has gotten off to, and there's so much more to go.
