Mets get Marcus Semien prediction that makes Brandon Nimmo trade look a lot worse

The New York Mets made a ton of changes to their roster this past offseason, and many did not work out at all.

While Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco are hurt and on the injured list, Marcus Semien has stayed healthy and in the lineup. But he's been one of the worst players in the Majors and has been a net negative for the Mets this season.

Their trade for Semien using Brandon Nimmo with the Texas Rangers is bad enough already, and The Athletic's Jim Bowden shared a prediction on Semien that would make this trade look even worse, as he believes Semien's decline is for real and will continue.

Marcus Semien's decline is for real, per ex-MLB GM

"My best guess: In decline phase," Bowden writes. "... The Mets should have seen Semien's decline last year with the Texas Rangers and not traded outfielder Brandon Nimmo for him. ...The three-time all-Star still plays Gold Glove defense, but the offense is not coming back."

Semien has been a great professional in his long MLB career, as he's posted 49.5 bWAR in his 14-year career. But this season, he has -0.1 bWAR, and is hitting .225 with a .592 OPS and 70 OPS+.

As Bowden notes, there were some warning signs last year with Semien, as his 98 OPS+ wasn't great, and his .669 OPS was also the worst of his career.

He still wasn't terrible last year for the Rangers, as he posted 3.3 bWAR. But, thanks to a declining offensive performance, which Bowden is predicting is what will continue from here on out, Semien's value will continue to crater.

Even though he's been one of the best players in baseball since 2021, his massive regression this year is predicted to be the beginning of the end for Semien.

For the Mets, who traded for him and the last three years of his $175 million contract, it's beginning to look like a complete disaster for the Mets.

Not only did they lose Nimmo, but the Mets are now stuck with Semien, who's set to make a lot of money and is already beginning to decline before he's provided any positive value for the Mets.
