Mets get good news on signing Cody Bellinger in free agency

The New York Mets are making a habit of taking players from the New York Yankees.

Could Cody Bellinger be next?

That's certainly what Mets fans are hoping.

And in a new article from ESPN's David Schoenfield, the news is looking up for the Queens side of this rivalry.

Schoenfield predicted that the Mets will end up with Bellinger, with the Yankees still pursuing him but coming up short in the end.

"(David) Stearns is clearly emphasizing defense -- bringing in Marcus Semien to play second base and ditching Alonso," Schoenfield wrote. "Bellinger fits in that regard, especially in left field, where he would be a plus defender, and he can handle center as well. The Dodgers could be in the mix here as well, but that outfield hole for the Mets is glaring. If they aren't going to sign Tucker and if they're not willing to give a long-term deal to a pitcher, Bellinger is the best fit for them at the top of the market."

The projection Schoenfield provides is a six-year contract for $180 million.

He writes that the Cincinnati Reds appear to be out of the running, while the Yankees are still involved.

The Mets have already gotten Devin Williams and Luke Weaver from the Yanks this offseason, and of course last winter, they signed Juan Soto away from the Bronx.

Bellinger played his most games in a season since 2018 as part of a standout 2025 campaign. He certainly looked at home in Yankee Stadium. Would he leave that? The Mets appear ready to make a push for it.
