Too bad Freddy Peralta, who posted a triple-double Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies, wasn't playing basketball Saturday.
On the hardwood, the New York Mets pitcher would have been a hero, but at Citizens Bank Park, Peralta became the third starter to surrender at least 10 runs in a start this season. He yielded 10 earned runs on 10 hits.
The Phillies, powered by Kyle Schwarber, crushed the Mets, 15-3, as Peralta (5-6) allowed the most runs during any start of his nine-year career.
Schwarber established a unique MLB record with his two, third-inning homers. For the first time in the Statcast era, the Phillies slugger amassed over 900 feet of combined blasts in one inning. He finished with three home runs and six RBI.
Mets' Freddy Peralta blasted by Phillies' Kyle Schwarber
Schwarber led off the third inning with a 456-foot solo homer off Peralta, lifting the Phillies to a 4-0 advantage. The lead grew fast. By the time he connected on a three-run homer off reliever Cionel Perez later in the inning, the 457-foot blast closed his pitching book on Peralta and increased his earned-run average to 4.83.
First baseman Bryce Harper went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI as the Phillies (41-35) took control with an eight-run third inning. The Mets fell to 34-42.
Before Peralta's trifecta Saturday, San Francisco Giants' Robbie Ray was the last MLB pitcher to yield at least 10 runs in an outing, according to Statmuse.com. He surrendered 10 runs on 11 hits in a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 18. Washington Nationals' Miles Mikolas yielded 11 runs on 11 hits to the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 3.
