Mets' Francisco Alvarez is doing a catching drill you've never seen before

The New York Mets didn't get the most reliable season out of catcher Francisco Alvarez in 2025.

They're hoping their talented young catcher can be available early and often in the 2026 MLB season while also continuing to improve his game.

Toward the improvement goal, Alvarez has arrived at Spring Training and likely hopes to grow on the defensive side of the game.

MLB reporter Joel Sherman actually spotted Alvarez doing what appears to be a relatively novel drill on Monday: Catching a frisbee.

This is pretty cool:

First, I hope this warms some New Yorkers battling the cold. Second, I always enjoy a drill I have never seen — Francisco Alvarez catching a frisbee. pic.twitter.com/PXqaQTVvfj

Catchers have come up with all kinds of different drills in recent years to improve their receiving.

This one seems pretty darn new, though.

The thinking likely has to do with the shape of the frisbee. Not only does the catcher have to display hand-eye coordination to snatch it, but then firming the wrist to display that frisbee parallel to the ground simulates the motion of the glove to stick a pitch in place.

We'll see if this helps Alvarez defensively in 2026, but it's certainly a cool new drill that every catcher could try.
