Mets could lose Pete Alonso to surprise AL team on $100 million deal

Pete Alonso remains unsigned and as spring training approaches, he may end up signing a less lucrative deal and try his luck in free agency again next. If that is the case, a surprise American League team could land him.

Most teams that can afford Alonso have already found a first baseman for 2025 and may be gearing up to go after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. next winter. However, as the season gets closer, he could sign a deal similar to Cody Bellinger's deal with the Chicago Cubs last offseason. Scott Boras, who represents Alonso, also represents Bellinger. Newsweek's Noah Camras suggested that the Los Angeles Angels could land Alonso on a four-year, $100 million deal with multiple opt-outs.

"While it's tough to gauge Alonso's market right now, he could be willing to take a four-year, $100 million with opt outs after the second and third year," wrote Camras. "Alonso would get a significantly higher AAV than Santander, while also being able to re-enter free agency when he's 32 years old, and still capable of cashing in as a power threat in the middle of a team's lineup."

The Angels have not had a track record of winning recently, but they could be willing to make a splash to better compete in 2025. They have been relatively quiet since trading for Jorge Soler and signing Yusei Kikuchi.

"However, if the Angels want to contend in 2025 — which their front office has made it known they do — they need to make another splash," wrote Camras. "Alonso would be just that. The Angels need another true threat in the lineup next to Mike Trout, and the 30-year-old Alonso fits that bill."
