Mets could be buyers at trade deadline if this one thing comes true, but it would be a disaster

I personally don't see an avenue for the New York Mets to be buyers at the trade deadline, though I guess anything is possible in Major League Baseball.

I still have to remind myself sometimes that while the Mets have been horrible to start the year, it's only June 2. For all I know, the Mets can win 30 of their next 45 and be in a position to make the playoffs. They definitely have the talent to do so in terms of star players.

However, there definitely doesn't seem to be a sense that it's going to happen. While I don't think it's going to happen, and many others don't, it sounds like there's still an avenue for the Mets to at least somewhat be buyers.

According to the latest from MLB.com, while it remains uncertain what the Mets will do, a turnaround could prompt them to act.

“A turnaround could prompt Stearns to be a buyer, though the more likely scenario would be standing pat, allowing the returning players to serve as midseason reinforcements. If the Mets continue to falter and fall further back in the race, they could look to move whatever pieces they can, starting with ace Freddy Peralta, who is headed for free agency after the season,” Mark Feinsand of MLB.com wrote.

As Feinsand touched on here, I think the better idea for the Mets would be to move on from guys like Freddy Peralta and see what they can get in return.

The Mets right now just haven't been playing well enough to even suggest that if they turn things around over the next few months, it would last long enough for them to still be that good come October.
