Mets catcher appears to pray as Jared Young Is carted off following collision

A frightening scene unfolded Thursday night when New York Mets first baseman Jared Young was carted off the field following an accidental collision with pitcher Nolan McLean during the sixth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Mets announced that Young was transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The team provided an encouraging initial update, saying the 31-year-old had feeling in his extremities.

The injury occurred with Philadelphia leading 1-0 when Justin Crawford hit a slow ground ball toward first base.

McLean immediately broke toward the bag to cover while Young initially retreated toward first. McLean briefly slowed down as Young reached for the baseball with his right hand while attempting to keep a foot on the base.

As McLean accelerated again, the pitcher accidentally collided with Young’s head and stumbled over him while Crawford reached first.

Young fell face-first onto the field and remained motionless, immediately drawing concern from players and coaches.

Mets manager Andy Green and a member of the training staff quickly rushed onto the field before a medical cart was summoned.

Players from both teams watched as Young received medical attention. McLean bent over with his hands on his knees while his teammates gathered nearby. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez appeared to pray as Young was treated, while Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm took a knee near third base.

Young gives thumbs-up 

Young was immobilized before being placed on the cart. As he was transported from the field, he gave a thumbs-up gesture before disappearing behind the left-center-field fence.

The scary incident interrupts what has been an important season for Young.

In his first full major league campaign, Young has developed into a regular option at first base for New York. He entered the game batting .266 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs across 103 appearances.

Young had already overcome a significant setback this season after missing approximately six weeks because of a left knee injury.

The Mets are expected to provide additional information on Young’s condition following his hospital evaluation.
