Mets backed out of a Clay Holmes trade with Diamondbacks for medical reason

The New York Mets made a lot of moves on MLB trade deadline day, parting with a lot of veterans for some impressive prospect hauls.

One of those moves was with the Chicago Cubs, sending Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor for top infield prospect Jefferson Rojas. It was a nice move for the Mets, but it potentially might not have happened.

According to Nick Piecoro of azcentral.com, the Mets reportedly had a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks in place for Holmes before backing out of the deal. The reason why? The Mets were concerned about the medicals of a prospect in the deal.

"The Arizona Diamondbacks' attempt to acquire pitcher Clay Holmes from the New York Mets fell through at the trade deadline," Piecoro reports. "The Mets backed out of the initial deal due to concerns over a Diamondbacks prospect's medical records."

This is a very interesting report for the Mets, as they had reportedly gotten a deal all but across the finish line. They were ready to make it official.

However, during the review of the medicals of the players involved, the Mets had some concerns about what they saw regarding one of the prospects they'd be acquiring in trade for Holmes, and subsequently backed out of that deal.

Piecoro reported that the two teams then tried to rework the trade, but as can be seen by the Mets actually trading Holmes to the Cubs, those efforts clearly didn't pan out.

Holmes, the veteran right-hander who helped the Mets land Rojas, a highly-touted prospect and one of their best hauls of the deadline, almost didn't happen.

If the medicals checked out with this Diamondbacks' prospect, they might've shipped Holmes off to Arizona, missing out on the chance to land Rojas.

But, after backing out of that D-Backs trade, the Mets turned around and packaged Holmes and Taylor together to get a very strong return from the Cubs.

It worked out in the end for the Mets, but it wound up burning the D-Backs, as they didn't end up finding the significant pitcher upgrade they were trying to get in the Holmes trade.
